How it works
Unlike other cartographers, MapGuy does not use standardized “request for quote” forms. Why? Because every project, like every client, is unique. I don't use stock maps or templates; every map is made to suit your needs and specifications. A thorough discussion of your project gives everyone involved a clear understanding of the project’s scope, and helps avoid unpleasant surprises.
Initial Contact
Once you contact us by phone or e-mail, we can discuss your project in detail. This includes the content of your map, graphic style, how it will be used, and your schedule and budget. This consultation is, of course, free of charge.
Proposal / Estimate
With this information, we will develop a detailed cost estimate. This will include information about:
- Copyright and usage. This covers how the final maps will be used, as well as additional rights transferred to you. We can transfer full copyright, including original files, to you if desired.
- Revisions. The estimated cost includes two rounds of revisions. Additional revisions will be billed at an hourly rate. The estimate will clearly specify what counts as an included revision and what constitutes a reworking of the project. Once a project is started, requests for substantial reworking of the original specifications may require a revised estimate; this will be submitted for your approval before work continues.
- Delivery schedule. For simple projects, delivery dates will be specified for the initial proof and the final product. More complex projects will contain additional delivery dates for intermediate stages of work, such as initial concept, first proof, second proof, revisions, and final product. Rush projects can be accommodated at an additional cost.
- Cost breakdown. This includes the design fee, research (if needed), data collection, and other costs. Whenever possible, MapGuy uses free, public-domain data to help control your costs.
The estimate will be supplied to you in either PDF or written format.
Work Phase
Once you receive the estimate and approve it (or request changes to it), work begins immediately. Proofs will be provided according to schedule, revisions made, and the final proof provided for your approval. Once this is approved, the final product will be delivered.
Costs
While some other map designers offer estimated prices based on “typical” projects or “unit maps,” at MapGuy we believe that these prices are not very useful to clients. There is no such thing as a “typical” map, and many clients aren’t sure what area needs to be covered, or what level of detail is appropriate. That’s why we treat every map as a custom project.
On small projects, we typically require a payment of 50% of the estimated cost before work begins, with the remainder due when the final product is delivered. Larger projects are usually billed in installments; this can be adapted to suit your needs, and will be specified in the estimate.
